Rider Creek Waterfall Rider Creek Waterfall cascading into a lagoon of Cougar Reservoir on the South McKenzie River: This photograph was taken at the side of the "The Aufderheide", FS 19, near the pay station for Terwilliger Hot Springs, commonly known as Cougar Hot Springs. If you plan to partake, you should know, Terwilliger Hot Springs is very popular. Plan accordingly. Terwilliger Hot Springs are easy to find on the Aufderheide, FS 19, 7.5 miles from the intersection with Hwy 126, the McKenzie Pass. It's a quarter mile hike to the hot springs. strong>Fee Area:/strong> To be paid per person, paid on site, unless prior arrangements have been made with the concessionaire. Hoodoo Recreation Services, 541-822-3799. This is a Day Use Area, open sunrise to sunset, Strictly Enforced. This area is stunning in its beauty. The water comes from underground, filling six pools, spaced in a stairway down the ravine. Cougar Recreation Area in the Willamette National Forest: Terwilliger Hot Springs, aka, Cougar Hot Springs, is located in the Cougar Recreation area. The Cougar Recreation Area includes .25 mile on either side of the road from Hwy 126 to FS 1927, as well as the hot springs and Hidden Lake Campground. In an attempt to maintain the beauty and unique character of this area, the Forest Service has restricted camping to designated campgrounds and few dispersed areas south of the reservoir. Campgrounds within the Cougar Recreation Area include Delta Campground and Day Use Area, Slide Creek Campground and Day Use Area, Sunnyside Campground, Cougar Crssing Campground and Day Use Area, French Pete Campground, Echo/East Fork Day Use Area and Terwilliger Hot Springs. Enjoy the middle fork of the Willamette River, the Diamond Peak Wilderness Area, hiking trails to beautiful mountain lakes. Brad and I hiked up to Indigo Lake one summer. No photos, sorry, but as might be imagined, the lake was a striking blue faced with white walls of the escarpment. Find a hike in campground on the lake if interested: 5 tent sites only.
