Even though I live in Eugene, Oregon, I drive on the Umpqua Scenic Byway at least once a month and except for a hiatus of
last year, have done so for years. Unless I have something I want to do in Roseburg, I slip along and around it by getting off
I - 5 at the Sutherlin exit. I drive along the main road in Sutherlin until the traffic signal, then I turn right and make my way south
towards Wilbur and the North Bank Road. I love this perspective of the river as much as I love it further upstream. It's calmer
through here, settled down somewhat. Nevertheless, it's beautiful, and the Umpqua is my favorite river in all of Oregon.
Not that there aren't many beautiful rivers, each possessing a unique personality, the North Umpqua is my favorite.
This drive gives just one facet of the river's personality, and take advantage of every minute traveling.
