Lemolo Waterfalls
on the wild and scenic Umpqua River

Lemolo Waterfalls, and the hiking trail to it, is remarkable. The word "lemolo" in Chinook jargon means wild, untamed, and just as toketee, meaning pretty, graceful, comes to life when you see that fall, so does this. The hike is downhill all the way, and conversely, uphill on the return. As is stated in the Umpqua National Forest website, "A steep climb back up.". Hence the rating of difficult. I must say, the walk along the Umpqua when you get down into the canyon and the views of Lemolo Falls are worth every step. Directions for the hiking trail to Lemolo Waterfalls in the Umpqua National Forest

The Best View:

Before I begin with the directions, I have a caveat. There seems to be some confusion as to the name of FS 2610 on the Umpqua National Forest Website. It's called the Lemolo Lake Road, and I think that's right, since it takes you right by the lake. However, the directions given on USFS site for Lemolo Falls calls it Birds Point Road. On the page for Warm Springs Waterfalls, Birds Point Road is 2610-600. We're going back this summer. I will check it all out then, but for now I give you this caveat. Either way, as long as you're on FS road 2610, you'll know you're on the right road.

Turn north off the Rogue Umpqua Scenc Byway, Hwy 138, onto FS Road 2610. Drive 4.2 miles to FS Road 3401, Thorn Prairie Road. Go about .5 mile, turn right on FS Road 3401-800. Continue 1.75 miles, turn right at Road 3401-840. The trail is at the end of the road: .25 mile. These smaller roads are not the best, believe me. Not bad, just not good.

The trail is 1.7 mile. The brochure Thundering Waters distributed by the Umpqua National Forest, the Roseburg BLM and the city of Roseberg, rate this trail most difficult. As I stated above, it's rated difficult on the website. :-) All you need to remember is that it's a steady uphill climb out of the canyon.

Turn north off of the Rogue Umpqua Scenic Byway onto 2610, as described above. Drive 5.2 miles, crossing the dam to the rok in the road. Take the fork to the left, Road 2610-600. Proceed .5 mile, turn left across the wooden bridge and park at the trailhead. It's 1.5 miles to the waterfall, walking along the North Umpqua River Trail. This is a beautiful walk. Even if you never make it to the waterfall. :-)
