class 5 rapid and one of the rapids in this fall is a keeper. When I first read of that I wondered what the term "a keeper" referred to. Late
summer I understood exactly. At that time, I couldn't get a good photo of it, but looking to the left of the waterfall, the water is still low
enough that one can glimpse the rock scuplted spear that, yes, would grab hold of a raft and not let go - would keep it.

If you don't make this trip too late in the year, you can follow Hwy 138 to the northern entrance of Crater Lake, usually open until late September and early October, but in 2006 was open even later than that. Take in the beautiful Umpqua River and Crater Lake National Park when the wind blows and snow falls and be sure not to miss a thing.
