Travel Oregon: Sightseeing on the Santiam | |||||

Travel Oregon and ... enjoy the Mt Mt Washington impresses, no matter the viewpoint, but the best viewpoints to be had when traveling by car are the one from which I took this photo on the Santiam Pass and the magnificent views available on the Santiam Pass - McKenzie Pass Oregon Scenic Byway, hwy 242. The mountain rises above 75 square miles of lava strewn plains. It's been called a geologic wonderland. The peak we see today rose a shield volcano, and the angularity of the mountain is what's left after glaciation: the volcanic plug. Mt Washington wilderness area is rugged terrain, used primarily by hunters, mountain climbers and hikers. It is accessible only on foot. Compared to the nearby Mt Jefferson wilderness and 3 Sisters Wilderness, use is low. The primary trail is the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail extends 16.6 miles the wilderness, entering the wilderness in the north at Big Lake West Campground and leaving it near Dee Wright Observatory on the Santiam Pass - McKenzie Pass Oregon Scenic Byway. Travel Oregon, but protect our National Forests and Wilderness Areas. Other Hiking Trails accessible on the Over the River and through the Woods Scenic Byway if you care to check them out.
